Commonwealth funding for schools is growing and continues to grow

Total Commonwealth funding is projected to increase by 79.3 per cent from 2017-2029.


On average, funding for each student is projected to increase by 4.0 per cent every year.


Average funding per student will therefore grow faster than inflation.


By the time all schools are funded on a fair share of the Schooling Resource Standard (SRS) in 2029, the Commonwealth will have increased its contribution for students at government schools from 17 per cent in 2017 to 20 per cent in 2029.

Commonwealth funding for government schools will be at least 20 per cent of the SRS by 2023. The rest of a government school’s funding comes from their state or territory government and includes some private contributions.


The Commonwealth on the other hand is the majority funder of Catholic and independent schools and its funding will be at least 80 per cent of the SRS for those schools by 2023.

How does funding growth compare between governments?

Commonwealth school funding has grown at a faster rate than state and territory governments funding.


From 2006-07 to 2015-16, on a per student basis, Commonwealth funding for government schools has increased in real terms by 78.5 per cent.


Over the same period, state and territory funding has grown by 7.7 per cent.
